Heather (their lead singer) was at the Westbound show tonight and had fun. They need a new drummer, but otherwise, they're good to go in the fall.

You'll be seeing a lot of The Benefits come September or so. : )

I miss them too ...

WOOOOO I can't believe people voted for us, we SUCK! But yeah we'll be back next semester if all goes well, with a new drummer and potentially some new horn players (cause we're baller like that).

On the note of the Westbound Train show last night, those guys are SO nice. I was super uncomf seeing as I was the OLDEST KID THERE and they made me feel not so elderly. And the kids I talked to there were sweet too, one 16 year old told me he loved me. Amazing. Props to The Verbs and Magic Goat for having girl singers also, cause obviously we do it better.

And yay for The Benefits. More people vote for us. NOW!

<3 Heather

Ahhh! I can't decide between RazSum and The Verbs! It's terrible! I mean, I'm friends with both bands, but RazSum has been around longer and one of their gigs was the first ska show I've ever been to. It's tough. I think I have to go with RazSum just because.

Dude, I'm wicked excited to finally hear these Benefits that I've heard so much about for so long.

Tear. Having become involved in the Syracuse Ska Scene is sad, but at least now I'm REALLY involved, eh? :D Man, I love ska.

See now Heather we have the high school kids covered as far as getting them to come out. Now that you are back you get to work on bringing college people so you won't feel so old. Of course you can always feel better looking at Danny :-P

Haha.

From that list, I had to pick the Hotsteppers.

75% of the bands I've never heard play. I can't vote for myself, we're not really a band anymore. The last 3 I haven't heard in probably a year. So I really couldn't vote haha.

I've never been a huge fan of girl lead vocals, so I am definitly going to have to go with Raz Sum.

I've heard people say things like that before, but I guess I don't relate well. I like to hear a mixture of vocal styles, so I love to hear female vox, because they're just not as common in ska or any other genre of music, really.

And we've got 4 ska bands in Syracuse with female lead singers (Benefits, Hot Steppers, Magic Goat, Verbs), which I personally think is very, very cool.

Many touring bands have taken positive note of how much female participation we've had in ska bands over the years, starting with Kim Gates in Short Round, the all-grrl Pink Cheetahs and the grrl horn section of Cletus Doesn't Care, for example. Its not for everyone, I'm sure, but it seems like a good trend just the same ...

Quoted.

I saw Ryan at Big D and the Kids Table at the Continental in NYC the other day, and it was actually pretty funny. He was with my friend Chris who goes to SU and I'm standing there chatting with Chris and said Hey to Ryan and he introduced himself to me and I was like, "Hey, yeah, I've met you a bunch of times. I used to come see the Benefits in Syracuse all the time." He made my day by telling me that the band was going to be getting back together (well, that and Dave from Big D randomly singing "Everything is always falling apart" in the middle of GLD because Jeff Rosenstock was at the show).
