Tabs aren't just for playing covers. Everybody borrows and repurposes stuff from songs they like, and looking at a song's tab can help you figure out the bits of structure you'd like to use in your own music.

Creativity does not happen in a vacuum.

I've read this. The situation itself is absurd. I'm sure the internet sharing of tabs figured out by regular people is really wrecking the music industry. Just like the cassette did.

I hope you realize signing a petition online doesn't equate jack shit.

While this doesn't really directly effect me because most songs I want to learn I figure it out myself, this is stupid. This won't boost their sales in sheet music. It'll just make it a step harder for little kids to learn their favorite Slayer intro.

Brings a tear to my eye, that image. \m/

It's a failure on the music industry's part to realize that they can't treat music like a physical commodity anymore.

Which is sad, because they're obsessed with maintaining their fat margins, instead of adapting to the reality of the situation. Some people will always want the professionally produced CD/tab book/whatever, and when you crack down on people who want to help spread the word, it's less likely that those dyed-in-the-wool consumers will stick with you.

Hell, look at http://homestarrunner.com - no ads, 100% free content. They make their money purely off the merch section.

If that side of the music industry effects you in any way, you might wanna reconsider what kind of garbage you're playing through your stereo.

Just sayin.
