Just found out about The Portside Pirates tonight, when Will Fox sent me the info on the last minute Regatta 69 show at Castaways this coming Monday night.

Anyways, check them out: www.myspace.com/portsidepirates

It's hard to go wrong with a pirate theme.

BTW, I've already invited them to play Syracuse, possibly at the next SU ska party, which may or may not happen on Sat, Oct 8th (we'll know for sure in a couple days).

I saw them on the Arts Quad a few weeks ago. Um, they didn't do anything with the pirate theme and sounded like a reel big fish rip off. they weren't bad, but nothing too interesting.

Damn I wish I knew about the Regatta 69 show earlier, and I wish it wasn't a Monday.

i think if some of you knew what anna was singing about in our older songs youd rethink what is the worst lyrics ever. with that said, shes a better lyracist now.

It's not what you sing about, it's how you sing about it.

Johnny Evil wrote a song about circumcision, but the lyrics overshadow the totally ludicrous message of the song, and actually make it pretty damn funny (once you figure out what it's about).

If you have ever seen The Rick Johnson Rock 'n' Roll Machine, some of his songs are about really trivial things (like being disappointed in the design of the state quarter), but the lyrics are good enough where you don't focus on what the song is about.

I had a hard time describing that, but does anyone know where I'm coming from?

A neatly packaged pile of shit doesn't hide the fact that is indeed a pile of shit.

(edited my spelling)

hey, remember when third wave ska was fun, made you want to dance, and and occasionally laugh?

that's what these guys are going for. of course, that's also the reason ska in general isn't taken very seriously. but i wouldn't knock them for having some ridiculous lyrics. seeing them no the arts quad, it really seemed that was one of their good points. they were ridiculous, and that's what made them fun.

Well, its pretty obvious they're trying to be silly, but I'm okay with some ska bands being silly. But at the same time, I want to shake this preception that ALL ska bands are like that or even most.

It's all about balance and having one band like that on a show won't hurt anything ...

I focus a lot more on the music than the lyrics.

Great music can easily make up for bad lyrics.

Great lyrics cannot make up for bad music.

There is nothing wrong with being funny but in my opinion these guys missed the funny boat.

The music is most important to me and musically these guys do nothing for me. So I look to the next thing and that is lyrics and yet again I feel left out on the"Humor"

I saw these guys at the Nines in early Sept...they rocked! The place was packed to capacity, and the crowd loved them...people were dancing like crazy, there were even some attempts at crowd-surfing going on. I thought their horn section was especially strong. True, their lyrics are pretty crazy, even downright stupid sometimes, but I think that was their intention, and I found them pretty entertaining. I definitely recommend checking out one of their live shows sometime.
