Hey ya'll, sad news. Fats Domino is reported missing in New Orleans right now. what does this have to do with ska music? a lot. Fats Domino was a huge R&B musician, especially in the 1950s. Right around this time Jamaicans were using their transistor radios to pick up broadcasts from New Orleans and the rest of the Mississippi delta. Mariners were bringing back crates of records to be played on the local soundsystem and Fats Domino was one of the more popular musicians loved by Jamaicans. Make a long story short for those of you not to up on your jamaican history, jamaicans blended american r&b and mento together along with some native influences to create our ever so loved ska music. listen to some fats domino, then listen to some original jamaican ska. its crazy how similar they sound with the execption of the emphasis placed on the upbeat. So when watchin the news about the looting and all the anarchy goin on down there, keep in mind that this area was one of the key points of interest when it comes to american music. so many different styles originated in new orleans. and how many of these different styles impacted and influenced the music we listen to every day. now it looks as if new orleans is gonna be underwater forever. ain't that a shame....
go go gergie signing off.
