i've never been able to get together a successful ska band since it takes so many people.
Never heard of Chris Murray?
Seriously, so many people get hung up on "ska has to have a bunch of people," or "ska has to have horns."
My latest stupid pipe dream is to get a harmonica and a kick drum, and team up with someone who sings and plays guitar. We'd be the second smallest ska band in the world.
Actually, while Chris Murray was probably the first "one man ska band", he's helped create a new sub-genre of ska and has a lot of imitators right now. Justine has played one of the better ones on our
radio show the last 2 weeks,
Boston Sidecar, for example.
Honestly, I'm just dying for everyone to stop putting the same tired lineups together for a ska band. Too many start with a rock or punk band, add a trumpet and trombone, and then think they've accomplished something novel.

Give us something NEW. Whatever that might be, but just
TRY SOMETHING, okay?
Hell, if Hobo Slobo had a ska beat under their music, they'd be a jug-ska band, ya know? What a great concept!! I'm not saying they or anyone else should do that, I'm just pointing out how everyone can be a lot more creative. As just another example, check out the
Surfits from Germany. They're a surf-ska band. What a simple, but nice idea, huh???
We have too many ska bands imitating ska bands imitating ska bands
ad nasium.
Please let some new bands form locally that try something different!??!!?!?!?!?
And besides, that'd make my job of putting on shows much easier.
