I want to discuss this with our local bands. Even if a band is only together to play a handful of shows and have fun, a theme or band identity goes a long way in building a fanbase. I've seen lots of ska bands that did quality performances, but would not convince a casual observer to question the stereotype of "ska bands all sound the same."
I like that Gnar Dogs Revenge comes up with a different costume theme for each of their shows. They're like the Geico of Ska; hopefully they'll find a fun one that works, and stick with it.
There are touches that distinguish a band - Mrs. Skannotto's risque lyrics and matching Dickies shirts set them apart, and The Know How stands out with Alex's Moog licks and Skyler's presence - but a strong band identity can help them take it to the next level.
Frankly, I generally find that a band using a gimmick detracts from my opinion of them. Certainly there are exceptions, but I think that a gimmick is often a crutch for a band who is really not all that good.
And for what it's worth, I don't consider things like wearing matching shirts a gimmick. But I do consider wearing costumes a gimmick. It's a big part of what's kept me from ever really getting into the Aquabats.
What exactly do you mean by "strong band identity"?
