Given who his agent is, I'm sure he's mad, mad expensive to book.

It's not how much you can charge that determines what you make on a show, its the total receipts minus the expenses. $15 a head won't amount to much if he gets $2000 upfront and more off the back and we can't sell enough tickets to cover all that ...

Trust me -- no one getting $15 a head comes cheap.

well the SU matis show sold out even with the typical no publicity.
i emailed Hillel and Chabad house a month before no one replied.
i emailed the staff at the schine since i figured someone had a permit to use a room. its like detective work to find out about a reggae show. every year the csa has a a bob marley event and who the f knows about it???
you have to look for 1 of 3 flyers in the schine. on the wall amongst hundreds or spam ads.

anyway if you are a college student, get on your concert board and book some artists like Matisyahu, JBB , Adonai + I, Dub is a weapon, etc etc..

why? because universities have large $ accounts to pay these bands their guarantees and if they dont make back lots its ok. if an indy producer
puts on reggae in syracuse, they take huge risk to loose their shirt for the most part(JBB sells out). meditations at planet 505 w/ jahmel opening, maybe 10 of us there. but when i saw jah works at OCC they didnt care that there was only 10 of us, at least financially, because the college had their check all filled out. ras adam

In fairness, the show at the Underground in Schine was advertised on campus, which was plenty enough to sell it out. Its an easy sell for colleges to book and if you look, thats mostly what they've been booking.

Same when Mohawk Valley Community College did The Slackers. They made it free with college ID (any at all) and $5 to the general public, with about 150 people turning out. I'd have lost money with that turnout even at $10 a head, but the college was thrilled with that turnout and they had to pay a lot more for the band than I would have.

Putting on concerts is a business activity and if you can't make the numbers work, the show won't work. Definitely get on your college concert boards and help us book cool shows.

College shows are pretty good for smaller bands. I mean think about it this way, you get the money upfront, regardless of how many people come out. On top of which, it will likely draw a good amount of people who aren't your diehard, or even casual fans, so it gives you a chance to expand your fanbase.

And for the college it gets the students involved, and can draw public attention to your university.

That's where I see problems with ska bands. They always got soo many members the price is a lot higher!

1 grand doesn't split all that great with 7 guys!

And don't forget, you have to subtract gas, tolls, food and lodging before you even divide it up. I congratulated Atom (Atom & His Package) one time because it was such an obvious benefit that he kept his fee solely for himself and yet collected just as much as a 7 piece band would. People pay for artists, not the number of people performing, ya know?

Yeah, but it's not that bad if you're playing 6 or 7 nights a week.
