Hehe, I almost have the parental units convinced.

Wait. Think about it. Then wait some more. And think some more.
Anyway. Think about what you want done - existing design, adapted design, original artwork, size, linework, shading, color. Think about placement - do you want to show it off? Will it restrict your job opportunities? How many nerve endings are there in that area? How much is it going to hurt? How complex is the design? How long will it take the artist? Are you still going to be in love with it ten, twenty, thirty years down the line, or will you be embarrassed? If you go with color in an exposed area, are you willing to slap sunblock on it every time you go outdoors? How will it look if the colors fade? Will the level of detail hold up over time?
If all those questions don't make your head hurt, you're not thinking about it hard enough. And if your head does hurt, it's not half as bad as the needle carving into your skin.
I'm lucky that when I got the itch for ink, the two that I had done express something essential, keys to that-which-is-Twitch. I considered a few that, in hindsight, were merely phases. But I lucked out, and instead of embarassments, I ended up with points of pride.
