All the local bands I know mostly practice at someone's house (and usually in the basement) or they rent practice space.

Befriend your neighbors so you can head off potential problems, do a little cheap soundproofing (old mattresses at the curb work for that) and put a space heater down there and run it for an hour or more before a practice. Usually at least one person in the band has a suitable space for all that.

Of the bands that do rent space, how much do you pay?

I'd be very surprised if any of the local ska bands currently pay rent for practice space.

But bands I've known that have rented practice space locally seem to usually pay $200-300 month, depending on amenities.

Same with us. The awesome thing about the basement is there's absolutely no room. There's a big pool table with a bunch of crap on it in the middle and we all kind of circle around it. It's crazy haha.

My 'band' pays $100 a month. We share it with a death metal band and a pseudo-post hardcore band. We basically have a laptop, keyboard, weird instruments and some high pitched vocals ala atom and his package. It's fun. And I don't think it'll ever leave that practice space, and that's A-OK with me.

We share a space with 1-2 other bands (depending on when you catch us). We lucked out - we've got a huge space, in a corner of a building, with lots of windows. It's 300 a month altogether.

I ask because there's a ton of unused space in the shop I work at. It'd need serious remodeling (we don't even have a sink  ) but knowing how much bands can/do pay helps to figure out if it's worth it. In its favor, we could offer off-street parking, there's easy access to the highway and it's reasonably close to several music venues.
