Hey syracuseska peoples!

I did introduce myself in the introductions thread.

Yes, my first post is a promotion for a non-ska show.

I intend to come back here and try to expand my horizons, at the very least check out some ska stuff online.
Who knows, maybe I'll wind up going to a ska show! Never been!
I feel like this board and the 315 board need to mate. Lots of common ground, I'm sure!

Anyways, here's the flyer! (FREE COFFEE AT THIS SHOW, NO JOKE)

I really, sincerely encourage you to check out the bands' respective myspaces. Three very different styles, all awesome live!

Also, recommend me some good ska! My tastes fall on the more progressive side of things...I'll go out on a limb and say the more intricate the horn arrangements, the more I'd be into it!

Thank you, hopefully I won't be eviscerated for making this my first post. :P

hey pete, plenty of us are on the 315 Boards.
Rob B here.

Check these bands out! Oak & Bone is definitely one of Syracuse's best current bands.

You're reminding me that one of my New Years resolutions is to finally finish my beginners guide to ska I started long ago.

But in the meantime, I'd humbly suggest starting at the beginning with some solid 60s era ska like The Skatalites especially, but also others like Desmond Dekker, Laurel Aitkin, Ernest Ranglin, The Ethiopians, Prince Buster, for example. Even if you don't end up liking much of that, it'll help you make far more sense of what came after that era, like 2-tone in the late 70s and early 80s (The Specials, Madness, Bad Manners, The Selecter, The English Beat, for example) and then the crazy explosion in the 90s and beyond in all directions at once (everything from the Mighty Mighty Bosstones to Operation Ivy to NY Ska-Jazz Ensemble to Hepcat and everything inbetween).

Ska is now 50+ years old, so its not exactly simple to explain or to sample its myriad sounds that have evolved over all that time. In fact, you'll find we don't even all agree exactly what is and isn't ska. :pat:
