So....

I was fortunate enough to be able to catch the Murphys this past weekend in Boston. 4 days before the show, they announce all the opening acts. I got tix to the only Bg D show all weekend!! I was pumped! never seen Big D in Boston so I got the show early, got in the pit right after the band before Big D.

Guys...their set...sucked! In Boston, people were actually "booing" halfway through their set! They opened with an old tune which was good, then except for the end when they played LAX was all all the new stuff, and they even did some Reggae jams...The worst part about it was the crowd was a very young fresh Murphys crowd. Had Big D played nothing but old fast punk ska music I think they would have gained a TON of new fans...

The crowd were begging for something harder and faster.

Why do bands do dumb things?...

Why do bands play songs about booze and partying at all-ages shows? :P

If they're tired of playing the old stuff and they want to play reggae, that's what they should do.

Are you musicians, or are you waiters?

No the question is why did Big D write bad songs.

Also underage kids drink too Twitch, I know you were probably way to afraid of cops in high school, but most kids drink before their twenty first.

Your ability to miss the point astounds me.

There has been plenty of complaints on this board about Endive's booze and party lyrics, but I honestly don't think that's a good enough reason to chuck those songs.

If a band just plays what will make them popular, that makes them pandering hacks.

If Big D are proud of their new material and enjoy playing it, that is what they should play.

You come to the show why don't you go away
We got your money why don't you go away
So who's the dope why don't you go away

And for the record, if I was scared of anything, it was my father. Thank God he's been sober for 20+ years, he was a scary drunk.

Oof, my bad.

Also, yeah, I understand that.
That is like if the Flatliners knew they were on a ska show and only played their first album.

While I understand and largely agree with Twitch's point, there is also the very legit issue that when people pay good money to see Big D, they probably expect certain things and it sounds like they felt cheated. Its like one time when I saw the Slackers and they played almost none of their popular songs. I wasn't angry -- just supremely disappointed. What they played instead was good, mind you, but its not why I was there or paid to get in.

I seriously admire the fact that this band does pretty much whatever they want.
That said, they haven't written a halfway decent song in at least 5 years.

The fans are allowed to be disappointed, stop attending a band's shows, buying their records, etc etc etc.

And the bands are allowed to not give a f*ck.

I was bummed when Metallica went mainstream.

I was bummed when Soulive added a singer.

I was bummed when Ian and Ryan stopped playing ska-punk after Red Light Run It! broke up.

But they were all doing their thing, so I made my peace with that.

Even if I didn't like their new stuff, I'd have to respect Big D for having the balls to get in front of a crowd of rabid DKM fans and play reggae.

We don't own them, for chrissakes. If a band is gonna play the easy sell or "what the crowd wants" but their hearts aren't in it, I don't want to hear it.

I go to shows to hear The Truth.

I am no longer in the group known as Endive. I am now playing in a new rock band called Mike Brindisi and the New York Rock. Not much ska but check it out and let us know what you think:

http://www.myspace.com/mikebrindisimusic

Also, underage kids do drink, shit I started when I was 15-16? Most kids I knew did the same.

The point being like Danny said, I was not paying to see Big D play BAD reggae, and get booed from a new crowd. I actually like Reggae, and what they were playing sucked. I was mortified to actually here 16 and 17 year old's booing one of my favorite bands...and in their hometown...with a mostly Boston crowd. I believe the word we use for that in Boston sports would be..."CHOKE!"

Big D had the opportunity to blow the f*ck out of Tsongas arena. When will Big D be playing another sold out arena show?...opportunities like that don't come many times in your life as a band. [/b]

Music is more business than art, unfortunately. I think bands are allowed to not give a f*ck when they do something new, original, and desirable. Last time I checked, playing shitty music has been around for a long time. If Big D wants to not care and play bad music, that's fine by me. In the mean time, I won't pay to see them. Hardworking dudes they might be, but like Jay said, haven't written a good song in a while.

See, Big D should've been playing a mixture of punk and reggae, ska and dub, good and bad music this whole time and just not given a f*ck what people wanted to hear. Then when they got to this point people would already expect it from them and wouldn't be shocked with it suddenly happened.

That's what I did. Nobody liked me from the get-go, so I have nobody to let down haha.

I'm bummed too because now I don't want to book them at the Haunt. Especially for the money, so looking at this now from another angle, as a talent buyer they are not worth the money that the Agency Group is asking for them.
