I've been bringing this up many times privately and not making any headway, so I'll try another approach ...

I seek to be the booking agent and/or business manager for a ska band. Preferably in Syracuse, but not necessarily. All terms negotiable. But I only want to work closely with a band with serious ambition. In return, I'll use all my contacts and accumulated knowledge to promote your band. Prefer you already have a vision, but I can supply one if you don't already have one. Serious inquiries only. Must be willing and able to tour regionally and preferably nationally.

Would like to start with just one band and later possibly expand from that.

Contact me via my website: Kingston Beat

Thanks in advance. :P

Take this man up on the offer, don't be a fool!

Also, this line made me giggle... "Prefer you already have a vision, but I can supply one if you don't already have one."

PS: I want to see the Bill Rielly Enema make it to the top!

PPS: THE TOP I SAY!

I want to discuss this with our local bands. Even if a band is only together to play a handful of shows and have fun, a theme or band identity goes a long way in building a fanbase. I've seen lots of ska bands that did quality performances, but would not convince a casual observer to question the stereotype of "ska bands all sound the same."

I like that Gnar Dogs Revenge comes up with a different costume theme for each of their shows. They're like the Geico of Ska; hopefully they'll find a fun one that works, and stick with it.

There are touches that distinguish a band - Mrs. Skannotto's risque lyrics and matching Dickies shirts set them apart, and The Know How stands out with Alex's Moog licks and Skyler's presence - but a strong band identity can help them take it to the next level.

Frankly, I generally find that a band using a gimmick detracts from my opinion of them. Certainly there are exceptions, but I think that a gimmick is often a crutch for a band who is really not all that good.

And for what it's worth, I don't consider things like wearing matching shirts a gimmick. But I do consider wearing costumes a gimmick. It's a big part of what's kept me from ever really getting into the Aquabats.

What exactly do you mean by "strong band identity"?

If you have good music and good stage presence, I guarantee you no one will notice what you're wearing.

a while back when ASOB was on warped tour, they came out and jeff just started screaming every STD he could think of into the mic before they started playing. it definitely caught the crowds attention and made them come see what was going on.

another thing they used to do was make the crowd dance before they started playing. it was another way to make sure people were paying attention.

Steven Parker, you seem to have a comment for everything. Too bad that also seems to be the only thing you're good for, serving as Syracuse Ska's Very Own One Man Peanut Gallery.
