I've created a forum for the entire upstate ska scene. Since this one seems relatively dead, and appears to only be for people of syracuse.

It's brand new, but give it a shot, join and post and let's see where it goes.

First of all, yes, at the top of the page here it does say "Syracuse Ska Forum", but underneath that it also says "Discussing ska & reggae in Upstate New York". It's always said that and I've always been sincere about that.

If you want more discussion of Rochester or Buffalo, for example, feel free.

And yes, it's been a bit quiet of late, for a multitude of reasons. Right now most people are winding down their semesters -- the vast majority of who posts here are students and quite a few out of school happen to be teachers. So, we get caught up in the academic year calendar and all that entails.

Anyone is free to start up whatever else they want. But you're fooling yourself if you think it won't end up being quieter than here. There have been multiple attempts to have a RochesterSka.com and messageboards for that area and none of them lasted very long. Sad, but very true.

Syracuse is geographically in the middle of Upstate NY and we also seem by default to have become the heart and soul of ska in Upstate NY. We carry the checkered banner when others drop it, which is both a blessing and a curse, trust me. But it is what it is.

We have people on this messageboard from not only all over Upstate NY, but all over the Northeast US and beyond -- and presumably none of them cares that it says "Syracuse" at the top. In fact, its probably to your advantage to have people discuss your band here where more people will see it and its indexed widely than on a more localized site. I'm forever bugging bands to do that, because it really helps a lot when you want to play out of town if some kids already know something about your band.

Sheesh, our basketball team finally breaks into the Top 10 and all of sudden the Rochester people cry foul, go figure.

This forum dying isn't really that much of a surprise. syracuseska.com isn't updated very often so people might assume the forum is the same. The new forum looks good so far, easy to register and organized with a focus on accurate show information.

Thanks Ras Adam!

There have been some complaints lately that the updates haven't been happening in a very timely manner the last few months, which is absolutely true. After doing these for 150 months now (yeah, since July 1996 -- yikes!), its not always been a fun chore and sometimes it's been hard to get myself to do the diligent research that I've always tried to put into these things. I feel guilty for not doing them, but then I feel guilty if I don't do them right. Damned if I don't and damned if I do.

But then I had someone come up to me at the recent Pietasters show at the Westcott Theater and thank me for these show updates. No one had said that to me in a very long time, so it was easy to think maybe it didn't matter any more. But hey, I started doing this for 12 people originally and even if that one guy is the only one getting value out of these now, that's enough justification for me to continue in my mind.

I apologize for "resting for a spell", but I'm back at it so look out!!! :rambo:
