Of course, we're always trying to book "bigger" ska bands like The Slackers, Mustard Plug, The Toasters, etc.
But we also wanna keep doing "smaller" shows, which require "smaller" ska bands that can still legitimately headline or that at least a fair number of people think sounds like an headlining band. Of course, the "smaller" the band, the more incredibly subjective that gets.
Here are a few of my ideas:
The Best of the Worst from New Jersey. Mark Turley had them at the Westcott awhile back. Good people and a fun band.
The Johnstones from Toronto. These guys are WACKED. Think of a cross between RBF and the Beastie Boys. Its not about the music, but the zany live show. To get an idea of their personality, check out the video for
"Gone For a Long Time". These guys are one of the biggest ska bands in Canada right now and have taken the place of the Planet Smashers.
Murphy's Kids from Richmond VA. These guys blow my mind completely. I've never seen another band that can play tight reggae and kickass ska-punk at the same time. They're becoming a big deal in New Jersey.
Cryptorchid Chipmunk from Morgantown WV. Another wacky band that is best known for their live shows than for their music. But I hear they entertain like nobodies business.
The Void Union from Boston MA. Current and past members of Westbound Train with a female singer now. Their staple is still Skatalites instrumentals, but they're as tight a band as you'll ever see. We hope to bring them back to town in January.
Other people have suggested that bands like Tip The Van, The Flatliners and The Pinstripes can all legitimately headline Syracuse right now -- but how about bands like Have Nots or Stop Drop N Skank or The Argonauts or Abominable Killer Snowmen, for example?
Please tell me your ideas on this -- thanks!!!
